A barbell plates calculator is a simple tool that tells you exactly which weight plates to load on each side of your barbell for any target weight. You enter your total target weight, select your bar weight, and the calculator does all the math instantly — no mental arithmetic, no wrong weights on the bar.
Our calculator also includes a reverse barbell calculator — click the plates already on a bar and it tells you the total weight including the bar. This is useful when you walk up to a loaded bar in the gym and want to know how much it weighs without doing plate math in your head.
Understanding standard plate and bar weights helps you load correctly every time:
| Plate | Color (IWF Standard) | Weight kg | Weight lb |
|---|---|---|---|
| Large | Red | 25 kg | 55 lb |
| Large | Blue | 20 kg | 45 lb |
| Large | Yellow | 15 kg | 35 lb |
| Large | Green | 10 kg | 25 lb |
| Small | White | 5 kg | 10 lb |
| Small | Black | 2.5 kg | 5 lb |
| Fractional | Grey | 1.25 kg | 2.5 lb |
The math is simple: Plates per side = (Target Weight − Bar Weight) ÷ 2. Then the calculator finds the largest possible plate combinations from your available plates. It always uses the heaviest plates first to minimize the number of plates on the bar.
A reverse barbell calculator does the opposite of a standard plate calculator. Instead of entering a target weight, you click the plates that are already loaded on the bar — and the calculator tells you the total weight including the bar.
This is useful in three common situations:
To use it, click the 🔄 Reverse Calculator tab above, select your bar weight, then click each plate that's on the bar. The total updates instantly with every click.
Enter your target total weight, choose your bar, and the calculator subtracts the bar weight, divides by 2, and finds the optimal plate combination for each side using the largest plates first.
A reverse calculator works the opposite way — you select the plates already loaded on a bar and it calculates the total weight including the bar. Useful when you find a loaded bar in the gym and want to know how much it weighs instantly.
A standard men's Olympic barbell weighs 20 kg or 45 lb. Women's Olympic bars weigh 15 kg or 33 lb. Training or technique bars range from 10–15 kg. Always select the correct bar weight in the calculator for accurate results.
Asymmetric loading creates uneven force on the barbell and on your body during the lift. This increases injury risk and can cause the bar to flex or rotate unevenly. Always match plates on both sides exactly.
Yes — toggle between lb and kg with one tap. All plate options, bar weights, and totals update instantly. No manual conversion needed.
